Montgomery Movement: The Montgomery Express

montgomery movement

Amazing deep, DEEP soul! Released in 1974 on Folkways, this sounds like something that could have been on a label like Goldwax in the late 60's. There are a couple almost Meters style instrumentals on here, but the ballads on this record just rule! THEY RULE!!!

Just listen to "Gotta Make A Comeback" if you have any doubts about that.

Crink’s right, this album rules in a very serious way. The funk instros in a stand-alone context are a little unremarkable but acting as bookmarks for those beautiful deep soul ballads they’re just perfect. Worth noting that Folkways actually reissued/rereleased this album which was originally put out by a very small independent lab el (don’t have the name in front of me but there was a thorough Wax Poetics article about the group a couple years ago.)

It was originally on a label called Dove with a real plane text only cover. Folkways would sometimes reissue private/obscure releases.

Has anybody actually ever seen the original?

I know of a couple of a couple guys who probably have, but I personally only know of it via the “funk lexicon”.
