Kenneth Higney - Attic Demonstration

A tough one to write about because so much has already been said about it. First, though, I will say that if you have even the slightest interest in "outsider music" BUY THE CD REISSUE! Cause it is definitely all that.

What is so unique about this record in my opinion is that, unlike a lot of artists lumped into this catagory, I believe Higney truely had no idea that his record would sound totally demented when he made it. There is absolutle no hint of self irony here. none. You'll read reviews of, say, Gary Wilson for example - that say something to the effect of how he was a truely out of touch freak who lived in his parents basement, etc - bullshit! Higney is the real deal. Not to take away from Gary's "cred" or anything, because I think his records are great, but you'd have to be a fool to believe that Gary croons to dismemberd mannequins because he is some kind of wolf boy or something.

But, I digress - back to Higney… here is a guy who really can't play or sing (though he plays all the instruments on this, and I LOVE the sound he gets) and records a totally macabre record intended as a songwriting demo!?!? This sounds like the record that every 16 year old metal kid in America would have recorded at home as played by a 30 year old man. And I mean that as the highest possible compliment. If you have not heard this you need to. seriously.

Alex Chilton’s “Like Flies on Sherbert” comes to mind - twisty and leaden and a bit deranged. Savage fuzz breaks, nice one.
