Kobza - S/T

Posted on January 26, 2006 by canonical

Unfortunately waxidermy lacks the right character set so the title is obviously wrong. This is a Canadian pressing of a Ukranian folk/psych album, however all the information is written in Ukranian so there's not much I can say. I'll simply quote a recent ebay description:

"GREAT MAGIC SOUND RECORD!!!!!!"

The music is all over the place, from traditional Ukranian folk to lounge to psychadelic to folky covers of pop songs. I wish I could tell you more, but I'm not Ukranian so I'll let the sound clip do the talking.

There’s a Folkways LP called Music Of the Kobza - from Ukraine. I think it’s some kind of Balalaika type instrument.

Ah, cool. That’s probably the phonetic translation of the name then. On the back cover there is a picture of a bunch of guys from the group, and one is holding a weird guitar which I think is played throughout some of the clips.

I’ll have to check for that Folkways record.

Kobza from the Ukraine made several self-titled albums. The LP that is usually sold as their first (blue cover with landscape on it) is called KOBZA and offers boring choir music. The KOBZA with the black cover is their most interesting LP.

I have another Kobza LP from Canada with the front cover simply stating (without any indication to the band name) “BANNED IN THE USSR”. funny though, because these guys were an estrada group which were infact totally state supported. I believe they did two LPs on Melodiya.
