Ilhan Mimaroglu - Music For Jean Dubuffet’s Coucou Bazar (Finnadar 1973)

Dear Mr. Schnipper,

Please consider this review for future re-publication in your zine (the pay here at Waxidermy is awful and I could use the extra $):

Back when I was a kid in the UK, there was a commercial for the instant mashed potatoes brand "Smash". It showed small kitchen appliance robot dudes who lived on the moon. They'd totally look like 'oh shit' as the packets of pre-made mashed potatoes landed on their planet out of nowhere. This really bizarre singsong voice then repeated SMASH MAKES MASH SMASH MAKES MASH over and over while the metal alien dudes chirped and bleeped all over the place in a like robot Mimaroglu translating a Dubuffet painting voice. Ridiculous. It reminds me of a lot of the other sounds created by the like beard and labcoat and weird smelly dudes that I imagine worked at like the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center in the 60s or something. I got this record for 50 cents at a thrift store in Fairfield and I listened to it a lot while filling out job applications. It would be chill to be Turkish so I could be like 'what's up Mimaroglu?' and he would be like 'nothin just made this totally sick record out of an egg beater and a homemade oscillator.'

Thanks, D.

PS: props to my editor/co-Schnipperviewer™ Simon.

Hi Daniel,
Would you be interested in selling Mimaroglu’s Coucou LP to me? I am a listener of that era’s electronic music and very curious about that album especially after your comments. By the way, I am also Turkish and it has nothing to do with me being interested in that album.

Thanks
