Pesnyary - Belarussian Pop Music

Posted on March 14, 2006 by canonical

According to my math professor (who acted as translator), Pesnyary were a popular Belarussian pop/folk group. Upon further researching, this album, released in 1978, was an attempt to blend Belarussian folk music with the 10-years-too-late emerging pop/psych/garage scene in the USSR. While many will find it difficult to get over the singing, I think there are some truly great moments on this album. My friend tried to blame my excitement for it by stating "you just like it because it has fuzz and was on a state-run label (Melodiya)". Definitely recommended if you can get behind fuzzed out guitars, rolling organ, foreign vocals and state-run-excitement.

These guys made great albums from the beginning. I recommend the second with great fuzz-like heavy guitar and these strange choir passages!

Pesnyary was one of the best Soviet ensembles! They played so incredible music… and still play!

Long Live!
