Jack Marshall & Shelly Manne - Sounds!

Sounds

I forget where I got this record from, but I have probably had it for around 3 years & have listened to it about 3 times (two of those times were in preparation for this review). I do know that it was one of the records I "discovered" in my shelves when I had to move house a couple of years ago & realised I had bought it then filed it without listening to it.

Everybody knows of Shelly Manne but seemingly less people know of Jack Marshall & this record is a pretty zany offering compared to what these two guys usually present on record. Basically it is just Marshall on fingerstyle acoustic guitar & Manne on all measure of percussion instruments except for the drum kit. It actually works amazingly nicely & is a pretty enjoyable listen all the way through. They tackle tracks that are either brasilian, spanish or standards & present a novel take on them through the interesting use of percussion & quality guitar work.

The only other time I've seen this record is when someone posted it in their Soul Strut weekend finds a couple years ago & attested to it's niceity. Definitely a weird thing though from these two artists & Capitol Records.

wot - no track?
as a general comment - this is a great site. i’ve always loved this music and try to track down tunes by sabu martinez, bobby montez, fats sadi, jack arel and georges garvarentz amongst others - relative giants compared to some of these cats! keep up the fine work, gents!
