$27 Snap On Face

Fairly well known local Sebastopol, CA private issue rock lp that I (well, my girlfriend actually) found the weekend I moved north of the bay area. I'd heard of this lp previously, and the elaborate packaging and blue vinyl seem exciting enough at first, but this is a pretty disappointing record. First off, these guys are NOT real mental patients as they'd like you to believe. Not only are they fronting though, but they don't even do it well. So, at the end of the day, you're left with nothing more than some crappy, sub-Zappa, mock weirdness to contemplate making a pretty, translucent blue bowl out of….

Yes, a total spoof, but all in fun. “Tie you boots tight” was hilarious, AND true. I’ll bet if you asked any of these guys if they sucked, musically, they’d say yes and laugh about it. We all did way back then.
It still makes it for me after a quarter century of spins…always sounded like Flamin’ Groovies/Grateful Dead crashing headon into each other…the jam ending of “Tie Your Boots Tight” sums up the westcoast sound better than anyone else. I’ve got an unreleased tape & yes they can play - an extended “I Know You Rider” offers ample proof.

There are a lot of these early 70s California hippie goof lps. Nobody listens to them they are collected for the kitsch value, dropout exotica. Easy $100 on a dealers list though. For the mental angle you can’t do much better than Hi Hopes on Band n’Vocal or the Heitkotter lp.
