Various - Seventh Annual Bands Of Tomorrow Contest
Posted on November 22, 2006 by Kris Holmes

This is a record documenting the performances of the High School Division Finalists in the Seventh Annual “Bands Of Tomorrow” Contest held at Falls Church, Virginia on January 25, 1969. It’s on Century Records and was recorded live at Langley High School, who also won the Senior High School Division. Western Junior High School won the Junior Division.
Most of the record is pretty middle of the road, but enjoyable, school jazz band fare, but you get a rocking version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Uptight’ by Langley. There is good versions of ‘Hobo Flats’ & ‘Minion’ by George C. Marshall High (runners up behind Langley). A great version of ‘Shades’ by Oakton High. Yorktown High presents good versions of ‘Place Your Bets’ & ‘Bags New Groove’. There are other good tracks too, including a cool version of ‘Eleanor Rigby’. Most of the album is extremely listenable & I gather there are also other records of these contests from other years floating around. How this copy made it’s way down to New Zealand is that it was part of a container load of old stock bought from a couple of LA stores, nice.

Langley High also had a banging double lp in the early 70’s,
Dennis Coffey covers & such.
I lived a few blocks from Marshall High for 15 years
My wife was in their first graduating clas and
stepson in the class of 88.
