About
Waxidermy was created in the fall of 2005. Ed and I both had a similar idea for a website devoted to unusual old records - the collecting of which we both share an obsession for. After several months of back & forth emails that pretty much said, "hey, we should do this." and, "yeah, it's a good idea." something finally began to take shape. I definitely credit this to Ed, as I am an extremely lazy person. He also did a fantastic job designing the site.
In many ways this venture is somewhat a spin-off of the message forum on the Soulstrut.com website - the notorious hang out of record geeks around the world. This is where the nucleus of the idea took shape and how many of the contributors here know one another. It is also a place where a massive amount of information about great and obscure music is shared, and due to the nature of this unwieldy beast, lost.
Which brings us to the reasons for having a site such as Waxidermy. I must admit to having had reservations about cluttering up cyberspace with another music/record related website. There is an almost mind numbing about of information out there as it is. I do however feel it is highly disorganized and often not easily accessible, so the idea of a database rich in information, yet fun in spirit has always greatly appealed to me. In short: This is the website I have always wanted to see.
Seeking information on the strange and wonderful sounds of music outside of the mainstream, or buried by the sands of time can sometimes be a daunting task. We hope that the site will grow and become a resource & aide in this. So, if you have an interest in becoming a contributor please feel free to contact us.
