Bonnie Guitar / Edna Leal Williams

Here’s one I found a few weeks ago while digging in a massive basement of records. It’s a very stripped down and introspective affair, Bonnie and Edna supply the vocals and guitar work while Gary Morton plays bass and Ron Ussery plays flute. This record sound’s like a Joe Pass or Joe Diorio lp with fragile femme vocals and mellow flute on top of it. Nice sublime late night listening material here folks.

Yes, indeed. I found this little gem here in S.F. and can also vouch for it. Otherwordly, flutey, opening track is quite nice. Worth your time.

Sounds interesting. I have a Bonnie Guitar lp that’s pretty MOR. Sounds like she got a lot hipper- somebody must have slipped her something.

I first became aware of Bonnie Guitar after recently reading an article about her in the February 06 issue of “No Depression” magazine. Fortuitously, a few days after reading that article I was browsing through a stack of old vinyl at a thrift store and actually came across two of her albums. Her 1966 release titled “Two Worlds” and her 1969 release “Affair!” This lady is really talented. She was not only one of the very first ever female session guitarists, but also one of the first female producers and label owners. Unfortunately, almost none of her material has been transfered to CD. There is a compilation of her work called “Dark Moon” that the famous “Bear Family” records released on CD a while back. Otherwise, none of Bonnie Guitar’s seventeen albums and numerous singles are available in any form other than long out of print vinyl LP’s and 45’s. Here is a good site that lists her discography and a short bio:

I have recently become a big fan of this very talented lady, with the most beautiful!! voice. I came across her singing accidentally on an old cassette tape, not knowing who was singing, however determined to find out. And I did. We attended a concert she did in our state in December, 2007 and she is amazing!! A real treat.
