This album is sublime. I long to find out more about my current favourite record. Does anyone know more about Jan and Lorraine? Have they been tracked down yet?
And has anyone heard the Spike Drivers version of Break Out The Wine? I nearly fell over when first listening to “Soft Sounds For Gentle People Volume 2” and the cherished Jan and Lorraine song came on, but sung by what sounds like a Hippy/Hillbilly group.
This truly is one of the best albums in my collection of 800 or so. Just pulled it out for a listen today, and Googled them while the Assignment Song was playing. Just so outstanding. I bought this LP at Rhino’s annual sale-off in Los Angeles without knowing anything about them. So glad I got it.
Janice Grahm was my mother in law. She passed away in 1994. Her daughter (my wife) has a credit on the album as Taki (greek for loved one.
Jan was a very accomplished musician (masters degree from Harvard)and a very loving person. Lorraine is living in souther California and teaches guitar in the Palmdale area.
Jan’s Ex-husband and former manager Douglas Grahm is currently working on a remastered version of this great record. I do not know when it will be released, but keep your ears open.
Although this album was recorded in London, Jan and Lorraine were from Detroit MI.
Fallout recently released the album on CD – could this be the remastered version you refer to? I’m currently writing a review for Foxy Digitalis and your info about Jan & Lorraine was very helpful. Thanks
Jeff
Jan and Lorraine were from Detroit? That must explain the Spikedrivers connection via the cover of “Break Out The Wine.” The English rumors clearly due to the presence of all the UK session musos on the LP. A lovely LP indeed; it would be nice to see a legit, master tape quality reissue with detailed notes telling the whole story behind this LP.
I just got put onto these women through a friend of mine who said my new little duo (The Jilted Brides) reminded him of them. I just checked out their (sadly uninformative) myspace page and am blown away by what I heard. I must get this album!!
The Jilted Brides are also traveling through the States from May (we are playing at Terrastock) and we are trying to meet as many women in the psychedelic and electronic music community as we can, especially pioneers. We are making a kind of web TV/doco as we go. Bob, I’m sorry to hear about Jan. Do you think Lorraine would be interested in being contacted?
Linda Perhacs of course is another woman we’d love to meet.
I love this album so much since I discovered it on Youtube. But the version I downloaded on the web has only a five minute version of Assignment Song…the version on Youtube is 9 minutes. Does anyone know where I can find the full version? One of the best songs I’ve ever heard in full!

I’ve heard rumours that Ian and Lorraine were English.
Is that true ?
