Joe "Youngblood" Cobb – It’s L.B. Time

Joe Cobb was a well known radio DJ on Chicago’s WVON for many years in the 60s & 70s. He cut this 45 for the local Ex-Pect-Mo label in 1972 & it was then picked up nationally by Cutlass out of Nashville who gave the record the much more colorful label & slightly altered X-Pect-Mo spelling. It’s not a terribly tough 45 to come across (although this later label variation seems a little tougher to come across from my experience) but it holds a pretty special place in my mind for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that it was a gift from the person most responsible for getting me into collecting soul/funk 45s & the second is that it is one of the first (probably first five) funk 45s I ever owned. So this has been with my collection for a long time & seen a lot of other funky 45s come & join it. After all this time I still play it at gigs semi-regularly & rate it very high among my favorite funk 45s. Hope you enjoy it & love it as much as I do, “It’s the Loose Booty man”.

This is the funkiest slice of wax that I have heard in quite some time. Reminds me of James Brown, but there’s something else that I can’t quite put my finger on. For those of you jonesin for some serious funk, this is your fix.

I DJ @ The Good Foot in Long Beach, CA… It’s the longest running funk and soul club in North America (10+ years), once a month – in a tiny place on Cherry and 7th, underground …no promotion…packed solid. I am dropping this gem tonight for the first time! Thanks for the tip…

Thankyou so much, I’d never heard this for. Such a fabulous piece of that 69-74 sunshine funk, such an infectious positive groove.
