Julie Budd – Child of Plenty
This one might already be known to many people on here but it wasn’t known to me. Another blind buy (based on seeing there was a cover of “People Are Strange” and the totally cool photo of Julie on the back) and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The cover of People Are Strange is, well, strange. Sort of slightly psych but also to me it also sounds sort of disjointed-Broadway as well. It’s hard to describe so take a listen for yourselves. My favorite track on here is the first one: “All’s Quiet on West 23rd street”. The intro is banging, and when her voice comes in it’s just right to my ears. I suppose this could be considered pop, but to me it seems that there is something else going on.
Apparently Budd was a child prodigy sort of singer – cut her first album when she was 14 or so. She still seems to be around and has a website, but truthfully she seems to have gone the diva singer route which I find much less interesting than what’s on here. Oh, and here’s that photo of her from the back cover…

I bought this album for the Doors cover as well –
but was horrified by the ragtime arrangement and
oompah-pah-pah trombones … I did however get
a small measure of pleasure from the version of
“Black is Black” which has a nice groove to it.
I had such high hopes for “People are Strange” though.
Are you aware that Julie Budd is Barbra Streisand’s sister? You can’t miss the similar features in that cover photo and she even sounds a bit like her if you are listening for it. Great site!
At least I seem to recall that factoid from when she used to be on Merv Griffin all the time. A long time ago, mind you!
Julie is not Streisand’s sister; Barbra does have a half-sister, Roslyn Kind, who is also a very good vocalist.
actually, I thought she was Liza Minelli’s other singing sister (damn I can’t remember the second one’s name!)
I saw Julie on the Ed Sullivan Show and other shows when she was an adolescent- in fact I saw her on an amateur show (Ted Mack?) first. I was around 11 and I was totally in awe of her singing. In my mind at that time, I thought she was better than Barbra (and I was a B fan) and she was so young!!! I don’t care for her music now (different tastes) but I never forgot her name…what does that tell you?
By the way: Liza’s sister is Lorna Luft.

I remember Julie Budd on the Merv Griffin show in the 1960’s. Thought she was wonderful. I don’t care for her songs now either. She sounds so much like Barb, I bet she is afraid to sing her types of songs??? She is an awesom singer, I remembered her name all these years, looked her up to see what ever happened to her?? Is she married, children? Can’t find anything on her.
I remember her from the early days also. The looks and sound is so like Barbara. Haven’t heard any of her new stuff, but maybe now that B has scaled back, she should take another shot.
Hi julie. I was the paperboy where you lived for a while in daytona beach. I was clueless as far as you being a singer, but I know you were very nice. I went into the army in Dec. 1975. When I was at the post library at Ft. Hood, Texas I saw a record album with your picture and name on it. It was the album cover (it looks like where they tie up the ships at Terminal Island south of Los Angeles, ca) that had a picture of you and a bicycle. I worked at Los Alamitos for a year and a half. While
I was there I looked up your name in the phone book(year 1973). I never stopped by but I have always wondered if you lived in that little brick house in Seal Beach. You made quite an impression on me! Your mother would always talk with me when I collected for the newspaper. Your mother was always very nice. I am so glad you are still working and bringing great joy into the lives of so many people. “Don’t be alone in your Westside apartment…..” got me through a cold winter in my downtown apartment in Ansbach, Germany. Your voice inspired me to stay positive, dream big dreams, and the pilot light inside me roared as a large bondfire snapping and sparking with excitement for life. Whew….This is a little wierd, strange, and I hope NOT scary. When the spelling is really bad, and the message is jumping and bouncing around that’s when you know the feelings are real.
