Kaveret – Poogy Tales

I found this record in the thrift store when I was a stoned punker…didn’t think much of it and stashed it away. Now, I see that I’ve been sitting on a little soft psych, folk rock Israeli gem. Recorded sometime in the early 70s on Hed-Arzi ( same label as the legendary churchills LP), this thing is pure bliss from start to finish……..all over the place with dueling lead guitars, switching lead vocalists all singing in Arabic (I think!), mellow organ, and the doo right drummer. The last track is a full blown american-esque hard rock number with wah wah guitars and long drum break. Most of this LP is mellow in the vein of the track included. Overall a brilliant sleeper from the mid east. When I find out how to post a track……I will.

It’s probably Hebrew, not Arabic. Small detail, and anyway people are very ‘chill’ about those kinda things over there.

Actually, the name of the band was Kaveret. Poogy was the main charachter in this rock “opera.”

i just picked this up thinking ‘total raer hebrew psych’ now i see that not only has it been reissued, it has been waxidermy-ed as well. still a great album nonetheless.

This album is the quintessential musical classic – In Scuffedup’s words “a gem”. FYI – Four of the original Kaveret members are reuniting with “friends” this month on an 8 city tour. There’s still time to catch them in Washington, Philly and NYC. I saw the show in Toronto Saturday and they were in fine form, doing four numbers from this original album and other classics from their solo acts and successor bands. The audience devored it – in a mostly full thousand-seater concert hall, nearly everyone was up dancing and singing along the whole show. See http://www.teev.com/dgf/.
