Richard "Dimples" Fields – it’s finger lickin good

Here’s a really nice double lp on Dat Richfield Kat from 1973. Richard’s vocals are very reminiscent of Stevie Wonder’s to my ears. The album kicks off real nice like with the funky tune “Welcome to the cold duck”. The next few songs are nice mellow soul numbers. The following track “tears as big as canteloupes” is one of those doo wop kind of tracks that induces goosebumps. It’s probably my favorite track on here due to the chord changes and funky flute riff’s.

Side two starts off with the insanely infectious dancefloor cut “Dat Richfield Kat” which stretches for over twelve minutes. (Five minutes longer than the version that is on another one of his album’s entitled “Ready for Anything”) Side two ends with the racy funk of “the devil made whitey do it”. Skipping forward to the last side, Richard covers Sam Cooke’s beautiful song ” You send me”. I like his version and all but c’mon, nothing can beat the real thing as far as I’m concerned when it comes to that track. The album ends with the downright nasty funk of “it’s finger lickin good” with its rolling bassline and head nodding hip hop esque-beat make’s me wanna get up and just lose it. In my opinion this album has just the perfect mixture of funky soul songs and sweet soul ballads. File under: why the hell hasn’t this been reissued yet?

Hi there, this album looks incredible. I have a lot of Dimples’ stuff from the eighties, have you heard any of that? Some of it’s pretty, well, terrible. I knew his career stretched back to self-released stuff in the seventies, but this is the first time I’ve seen one of them. Thanks!
