Sam Spence – The Art of the Synthesizer

Volume 1 of a 2 part series here. Sam Spence was the dude known for his musical contributions to NFL Films highlights in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Going by the cover art, it seems Spence is playing a Moog 55 Synthesizer on here, and in the process of doing so he actually creates some listenable early 70s electronic music.

There’s a combination of full songs and “moog shots”; weird 10-15 second fills that would probably fit well on station identifications in the 1970s. I like a lot of the tracks on here, especially “Sunken Ship (version 2),” which was included on a DeWolfe compilation a few years ago. If Stereolab was around in 1972 they may have made songs quite similar to this one.

Great cover!

Listen to an excerpt of the Moog Shots.
