Shelly Dane: Sage & Satin

I’ve been meaning to post Shelly for a while now. I don’t know what the story on this dude is aside from the fact that there is a sick “cat on piano” photo of this “composer” on the back and he gives a shout out to L. RON, whom he bears a striking resemblance to.

If you’re daring enough to needledrop this thing, you will have to choke it down on the first track which is awful 70s MOR country (a 45 exists). I was daring enough to keep listening, and I’ve been strangely obsessed with it ever since. I picked 2 tracks below: the first is an oddball Northern Blue Eyed Soul cut with weird falsetto man vocals and even weirder lyrics. The second cut is one of the most demented 70s MOR tracks I’ve heard, all I can say is you’ll have to make it to the bridge to understand what I’m talking about. God knows what Shelly was going for here, I’m sure everyone will be thanking me for sharing!

My sister Karen and I grew up listening to our Dad…he is this man. Although the music he usually perfomed was not this way. The musicians that played with him on Sage and Satin were “studio” musicians and much like me, his son, made him sound a bit different than he did in his “solo” performances. Shelly, (later Dane Jenkins) was a little ambiguous about his direction. He really wanted to follow whatever road to success available…and like all of us, got a little lost along the way. There are some very nice cuts on this album…he was a very diverse and multi talented man. We miss him.

I guess I’m in the minority, but I think the first track is AWESOME…not weird, just straight up brilliant.

*if this was the flip to the 45, I’d be very happy.

forgot to mention- this is the same Shelly Dane who did a 45 on Reprise in the early sixties. Sought after popcorn track. Hannah Lee K

Also! Track two on here makes me think of Ramases.

I agree with Will. The first track is pretty swingin’ but the second track gives me the creeps. By the way, what are the names of those tracks? I’m curious.
