Search Party – Montgomery Chapel

I try not to get too carried away with featuring records that I have never owned, but I will probably never ever ever own this one, so whatever. If knowing that I do not actually own an original pressing of this hinders your enjoyment of reading about it on the internet may I suggest you seek therapy.

This is definitely one of the most haunting and beautiful Christian records I’ve heard. There is a charming, rough-hewn quality to it that almost reminds me of something like a school band record. About half of it has a slightly fuzzed out, semi-rockin’ sound, but the really amazing cuts are really mellow with high female vocals, spooky organ, and deep muffled bass-lines. A good example of which can be heard on “When He Calls”.

If someday I might only touch the hem of the garment of a quality vinyl reissue of this then my life shall be a bit more complete and meaningful.

Hi, this is Gordon P. (“Pete”) Apps. What the heck is going on? Yesterday I received an email from Scott Lewis at NYU: “Hi, Pete, sorry to bother you, but are you the same Pete Apps who made the amazing Search Party album?” I was too dumbstruck (and paranoid) to answer yesterday; but I did today.
Then I Googled ‘The Search Party’ and
saw an eBay reference – there’s a CD up for bid – and at only $10.49!!!! I have a copy somewhere; so I thought I’d bring it to your attention since you were so kind in your review, which I was amazed to find on Google’s ‘I’m Feeling Lucky’ option.

That’s me on guitar on When He Calls, also singing an octave below Joanie Goff on lead vocal. That’s Jim Carvalho on bass and high harmony, and Nicholas T.
Freund on organ (he wrote it, along with the bulk of what we recorded). Missing in action on this cut is Tim King on drums.

Got to run now, but if you’d like to correspond, that would be kinda neat. At any rate, the CD’s available for the next few days (supposedly unopened).

Best of everything, and thanks again,

    Pete

Hi, Scott Lewis here. The Search Party album was and is fantastic! I was thriled when Pete got back to me to confirm he was the one and same. I was glad to be able to tell him how great and lasting a work of art he helped to create.
