The Tuba Trio – Essence-The Heat and Warmth of Free Jazz

The Tuba Trio consists of Sam Rivers, Joe Daley and Warren Smith. As you can see by the picture, this was recorded live at the Bim Huis in Amsterdam in 1976. Surprisingly the tuba sounds great in the free improv setting. I really dig Sam Rivers flute playing on this one as well as Warren Smith’s drumming. This record is fantastic, I listen to it all the time.

    Gotta LOVE Warren’s P U R P L E drums!!! I am green with envy…

Rivers recorded a whole bunch with the tuba trio. In addition to 2 further volumes of the Tuba Trio on Circle, at least one of his 2 two-LP sets on Horo (“Black Arfica – Perugia” is the one I have) features Rivers in the company of tuba player Joe Daley and traps basher Syd Smart.
