The Younger Brothers – Coming Out

This is a Boston area blue eyed soul duo, similar to the Righteous Brothers or Tom Jones. It does have some excellent parts and I was pleasantly surprised with a few of the cuts. It is all covers and my favorites include ‘Show Me’, ‘Its a Mans Mans World’ & ‘I Thank You’. My copy has original vinyl, but the cover is a photocopy of the original cover. The dealer I got mine from found 2 copies, one without a cover so they made their own.

I used to have this disc (25 cents at SallyAnn). Dull and totally uninteresting. All tunes are covers, even a Beatles song. These guys didn’t have much to say. Beyond the vocals; the lushly uninspired background tracks sound like James Brown Band on prozac. Only value points: 60’s Boston “obscuro” with kitsch gay connotation. Weak and insipid!

I disagree….I think its a BIT better than that. Definately not amazing, but the vocal breakdown/hits in ‘Show Me’, are pretty good. As are a few of the other tracks. They aren’t gonna change the world or anything, but definately worth a listen, especially for anyone from boston.

I caught this act a few times in 1969-1970 at Lucifer’s in Boston. One of the better big show bands to hit town. The shows were tight, fast paced, well arranged, mostly R&B, but they mixed in some top 40 and Broadway show tunes as well. Really good horn section pushed by a Hammond B3 player, guitar, bass & drums. Think they were headed to Las Vegas after their Boston gig.
