Troubled Mind – I’m Good For You

The Troubled Mind(s) were a late 60s band that started off in Napier, New Zealand around 1966/67 and then moved to Auckland around July 1967. The band seems to have disbanded shortly after releasing this, their third and final 45 in February 1969. Their earlier stuff covered more of a traditional 60s R&B style and is a bit tougher as displayed by the final three tracks here which are from a 1967 radio spot. This final 45 was recorded in Auckland and touched on much more of a blue-eyed soul sound complete with horn section etc. The songs chosen for the 45 are pretty interesting to me, the A-side “I’m Good For You” was composed by New Zealander Ray Columbus but was actually recorded first by Bay Area R&B group Fire in 1967 while the flip is a cover of Leon Patillo’s “Freedom”, surely another fairly obscure choice for a New Zealand band in 1969. In any case, since straight soul 45s from 1960s New Zealand are pretty thin on the ground, this definitely ranks up there among the best of a small bunch for me.

I could be wrong (the facts are hard to nail) but I think their Phillips single, misdated on some sites as 1966 was actually 1969, at the earliest 1968. Certainly not ’66. My discussion and pretty much all I know about it here:

Be interested in your take on it if you can have a look at it.
I’ll write a page about I’m Good For You next, thanks to your pointer to the Fire version. Cheers from Australia [my site: “Where Did They Get That Song?” at poparchives.com.au]
