Cable Car Soundscapes

cable car sounds

This is the kind of record that brings joy to my life and reminds me of why I got into collecting oddball records in the first place. It's a local bay area lp from the early 80′s of a guy who, just as the name implies, recorded the sounds of cable cars. Side A is the "naked" sound of the cars – which are amazingly avant garde sounding on their own, and side B is music concrete experiments he made from these recordings. The pieces are long, and sound-clips really would not this justice. So, if you are into this kinda stuff at all I recommend tracking a copy down. It's not too, too difficult/costly to find, and there are two pressings – this private version and another (later?) pressing on Folkways.

  1. I remember seeing a special on KRON news showcasing the cable car drivers exceptional bell-ringing abilities. Is there anything like that on this album? That would be hella fresh.
