A Few Chords, “That’s It, Kenny - Kick it Off”

…. and for the next 2:09 it's like he never wandered off into the woods 30 years earlier with a dynamite reduex of the hit title number ("Wildcat Tamer"). What follows is a joyride along the backroutes of rock & roll from one of the original ultra cool guys, but don't kid yourself thinking this's gonna be one of those 'faded glory comeback' jobs - he outrocks anyone 1/3 his age. There's swampstew ("Take It Home"'ll slay ya), backporch blues ("Goin' Down The Road"), Roadhouse rock ("Born In Louisiana") and more by the bucketful with the band proving right away they gots the moves. "Change Game"'s so down in the groove it's primordial - this's the stuff, likewise "Country Girl", and THE ROLLING STONES in their prime would have gladly hocked the family jewels to pull off "Every Way I Can". The original "Susie Q" was a flaming nova of spontaneity never to be recreated tho the version that wraps things up, along with "Natural Man", serve to remind how much JOHN FOGERTY owes his entire career to the man at hand. "Dale Hawkins takes the stage at 9PM and shows how it's done" was the blurb for a 1999 Philadelphia club date when this came out. He does, in spades.
