Critics don’t necessarily have good taste, do they?

How many times have you read a review for the new one by LOU REED, NEIL YOUNG, or any other long-lived rocker……

…..that says something like "after many disappointments this is the one fans have been waiting for"??? Poor Donovan, it's happened to him so many times. His last one, 'Sutras' had 'em fawning all sorts of piffle but it wasn't any good. And then this quietly slipped out and the same thing happened again….only……his voice sounds exactly as it did 36 years ago along with everything else about it. Backed by just JIM KELTNER and DANNY THOMPSON (with THAT upright bass sound) plus occasional keys from JIM CHELEW, here's what should have followed up the 'Sunshine Superman' and 'Mellow Yellow' Lp's. Within one minute of the opening "Love Floats" you know this's on the level of what it would be like hearing a new BEATLES Lp right now. From decades past, that so cool 60's Swingin' London jazzblues sound/vibe/groove comes roarin' back a la "Poorman's Sunshine", the suave "Yin My Yang" and the set to sound DYLAN THOMAS poem "Do Not Go Gentle". Want him to get all mystic on ya? "Shambhala", "Two Lovers" and the deepest he's gone "Whirlwind" show that side doing just fine. "The Question" retains his playfullness while "The Cuckoo" slays countless UK Trad folkrock Lp's in under four minutes. Even tho he released a slew of forgettable Lp's for ages he always seemed true to his ideals. This one confirms his sincerity.
