Another Crown atrocity that plays like total rubbish. This would actually be not a bad album of flamenco guitar. The guitarist Jose Barroso is really quite good although he only took up the guitar aged 39 & this album of Laurindo Almeida tunes is quite appealing if you are into that sort of thing. Everyone should know Laurindo Almeida but I had never heard of Jose Barroso. According to the liner notes he was originally a cellist with first of all the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra then the Seattle Symphony before throwing that all away for the career of a studio guitarist in LA. The liner notes go on to state that "this will be one of your most treasured albums". I bought it at the same book fair where I got the Eddie Gomez, Pete Seeger & Opus Jazz LPs I already reviewed here & this one will soon join Eddie Gomez in the trash. If only it was pressed better & the cover wasn't worn. Oh well, easy come, easy go. Check out the opening track Farruca.

Jose Barroso was my classical guitar teacher many years ago. He taught classical guitar in his home in Burbank, California. I was then in my 20s and now I’m almost 70 and, I’ve picked up my guitar again and playing the studies that he taught me and more. It was a real treat finding this web site and reliving some beautiful memories.
Hi Bob, Great to hear of your memories with Jose Barroso, on this record he sounded like a talented guitarist, it was a shame I found it in such bad condition.
I also studied guitar from Mr. Barroso.
I lived across the street from him in Burbank at age 7. I only took lessons from him for 2 years before we moved away. I couldn’t wait to go to my lessons. If only to watch him play.
I became good enough to play duets with his young relative (neice?) named Lita. She was very gifted protege.
I’ve had a life long passion for music due to his tutoring.
Recently, my youngest son auditioned and was accepted into LMU’s music program where he plays classical guitar. Thank you Mr. Barroso
I too lived across the street from Jose on Cordova St. I started taking lessons in 1959 when I was 7 but only for 2 years. Jose wrote the music for Lita and I and we often played our guitars together. Once we played a duet on stage at a large guitar recital. Jose’s lessons gave me the foundation for my present day finger picking ability at 59 years old. I’ll always wonder what happened to my friend Lita. CV…..who are you? Can we chat?
