Judy and The P.T.S. – Blue / You Need Love

The Huntington Beach, California-based Outstanding Records label may be better known to Waxidermists for releasing the “It’s Broken” LP by Bob Chance, but they’ve been responsible for numerous other interesting releases since 1968, including this little gem of a single.  Both sides feature a keyboard-dominated soft folk pop sound, with a bit of a jazzy garage vibe.   Judy’s timeless vocals float thru the ether, with some well-placed reverb for effect.  Both songs are excellent and upbeat, yet with a moody feel that hits all the right sweet spots for me.

According to recent correspondence I’ve had with label founder Earl Beecher, Judy was a vocal student of Annette Warren Smith, the wife of jazz pianist Paul Smith, who accompanied Judy on the single, hence the P.T.S. stands for Paul T. Smith.  Beecher says that the single would have been produced early in the label’s existence, probably 1968 or 1969, and there were only a couple hundred copies made.  While this is the only release Judy made for the label, Outstanding Records is still going strong after 42 years, and can be found at www.outstandingmusic.com.
