Lyn Barnett – Please Mr Postman

There is something that is just so innocent & nice about a country like New Zealand back in the early 1960s. I think for me it is best summed up in some of the local records released here where local artists would often do their best imitations of overseas smash hits. This 45 is pretty much a personification of that feeling. Lyn Barnett's career as a singer was relatively unremarkable, not terrible by any stretch of the imagination, but she wasn't really a huge star either. She was contracted to Viking (one of the largest local independent labels of the time) for the best part of 1962-63 & released five 45s & one LP while she was there. Please Mr Postman was the second of these. Lyn hailed from Wellington & at a similar time her younger sister Christine was contracted to the smaller Lexian label where she also released five 45s & appeared on a compilation LP. Both girls were in their mid-teens at the time, so their fleeting recording careers happened at a young age. The instrumental backing on this 45 is provided by the prolific Garth Young Orchestra.

  2. I used to “go steady” with Lyn, and indeed her sister Christine, in Sydney back in the 70s. Lyn used to do the odd spot on Channel 10, and did the cruise ships and leagues club spots. She was a wild woman….haven’t seen her for over 20 years. Love ya Lyn!
