A decent hypnotic example of Ethio jazz. This track makes me want to a) Visit Ethiopia. B) Charm Snakes.

I’ve been looking for anything by this guy! All i could find was a song on one of those Ethiopoques comps. Good to know somebody reissued this!

rujan75….ya been looking for mualtu stuff? there is quite a bit about currently….”worthy” is a label to seek……..Jim Jarmush’s 2005 film Broken Flowers made pumped the general populus to seek the sound. Mulatu Astatke (also spelt Astatqé on French releases) was interviewed in Wax Poetics magazine (Issue #14, Fall 2005) by Miles Cleret (of SOUNDWAY records as mentioned above by m.dejean)

also check out Getatchew Mekurya, a killer ethiopian sax player…..i have found myself often lost and absorbed when leaving these records playing loud at home….

    best of luck

One Ethiopiques comp is nothing but Astatqe and his band, though it’s not obvious from the packaging (it looks like he’s only given writing credit, and not for all of the songs).

“Ethiopiques 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale”

compiles two albums from the early 70s

I had to record this one, but it was worth it. The best track I’ve heard from Astatke. What a find, I’m envious!
