Baroques: S/T

baroques

One of my personal favorite psych lp's ever. From Milwaukee, WI, the Baroques recorded just this one record for Chess in 1967. Don't let the Chess affiliation fool 'ya. It carries none of the cheesy trappings of stuff like Rotary Connection, etc. The sound is raw and like nothing else I've ever heard on the label. Ranging from dark and brooding, to whimsy, to fuzzed-out-freak-outs without ever falling into silly good-timey crap, or tired blues rock like so many a weaker psych record. Check out the top-notch guitar rave-up on "Musical Tribute To the Oscar Mayer Wiener Wagon".

I’m so tired of trying to find this album.
Every time it’s on eBay, I raise my bid amount
but still lose by a dollar.
I ask for it on trade lists, I mention it to sellers, collectros…
I offered an online seller to trade a copy of a record he was
selling for $250 for his copy of the Baroques that was $100,
    and he wouldn’t do it.
GOD DOESN’T WANT ME TO HAVE THIS LP!!!

That is just sad. It was real tough to find for me as well. Ended up getting it for a reasonable (but not cheap) price at a record show. Early-bird admission in effect, yo! Definitely one of the most worthwhile psych records that won’t completely ravage your finances.

  3. This is a great record…my copy disappeared years ago.I managed to get some sorta bootleg/demo album of these guys from Metro Music years later which sorta eased the pain..I’ll pick it up again one day

  4. don’t knock chess or rotary – please and thanks. you wouldn’t even be able to mention them if they hadn’t made their mark in music history. This is a smashing great garage-style, fuzz-laden, psych track. I don’t care if walmart released it!

Dang, I like this ban and awful lot, but the dumb 22-trk CD out there drops 3 songs from the original LP! Those tunes couldn’t be worse than the 12-minute wankfest that’s taking up precious room on the CD. I’d even settle for a repro of the album. Frustrating.

I saw the Baroques when I was in high school in the 60s. A very cool band. I have their album and wouldn’t mind parting with it if anyone is interested.

A dollar? Is that the OG or a reissue?

I picked up the reissue a couple of months ago and I’ve been playing it frequently – what a great, diverse record, including one track that sounds like the Monks!

And the reissue went for $25 plus. If you got the original for a buck that’s a great find.

  8. hello ,is there any connection from “the baroques“to this band ”new liquid crystal”??? on buddy records .maybe same singer??
