Thundertones: Cloudburst

For some reason I keep putting off finishing and posting this review. I guess it might be that I’m sorta kinda bummed that I didn’t end up keeping this one – but, now that it has a loving new owner, I should probably let the healing begin or whatever. Anyhow, medium length story short, we had an uncharacteristically wet winter last year here in NorCal and the basement of the local university flooded – all but ruining a large record collection that had been stored there. This is the story I was told anyhow as I was purchasing a goodly amount of records from a local guy who’d been called to clear out the mess.

I didn’t realize the irony until just now, but the best find of that day just so happened to be called “Cloudburst”. With a beautifully silk-screened cover, and pressed on aqua colored vinyl, it looks like a page right out of record collector fiction. There is little info on the sleeve other than some generic liner notes that suggest the group was from the west coast. No year, but based on the extremely raw sound and style I can’t see it being from any later than the mid-60’s. Very possibly earlier. So, once again, I’ll end this review with a request that anyone with any info on this group/lp drop a comment. Oh yeah, and I’m fairly certain this has no relation to the better known “Lenny & the Thundertones”, FYI…

Yeah, Lenny & The Thundertones were from Detroit. Did you record whole LP? I already grabbed the two tracks you posted in the eBay listing.

Also, if you like this check out the Strummin’ Mental series on Link. 5 whole LPs of this kinda primitivo instrumental stuff.

I only noticed the cool silkscreen effects on the enlarged detail. Nice how the watery dark blue is printed on top of the rest of the colors. Nice tune too.
