1974 St. Mel’s Choir Concert

This is a recording of a two day concert from a Catholic church in Venice, CA. I like the design of the cross on the front cover. It is revealed on the back cover’s song list, roughly hand-written in green marker, that Ed McMahon narrates a twenty plus minute skit about the rise of Pope John Paul II. The Combined Choir takes on secular songs, such as “Theme From 2001 (Also Sprach Zarathrustra)”, which ironically was based on a composition by Richard Strauss, inspired by a story by the famously atheist philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. The choir is backed by a band. “We’ve Only Just Begun” is done, as well. There’s another song here, “Suffer Little Children”. I know it uses King James Version wording regarding Jesus Christ commading grown men to have the easily-gained spiritual faith of young ones, but still, kids singing those particular lyrics is a little creepy.

wasn’t there a funk version of also sprach zarathustra in the beginning of the movie Being There? the back up band sounds just like that.
