Duo Ouro Negro – Pata Pata

During my recent travel to Portugal I had quite some records of this group in my hands. I usually checked them out because of their cover art but most of the times the musical content was disappointing. After I already filed them in the don’t bother with section I gave two more 45s which I hadn’t seen before another chance. Both are 4 track 7″‘s one called “Pata Pata” and the other “Kubatoque Mulata”. Three out of four songs on these two records are a rather boring mixture of Portugese pop and Brazilian music.

The last songs on the two records though are equally great. “Upa neguihno” is a really raw and energetic version of the famous Edu Lobo tune. Even though I hate the term it’s purest “dance floor jazz”. The other stand out tune is called “Palamie” with nice drums and a light touch of afro that sounds quite unique making it hard to describe. Even though it’s not really “funky/psych/jazzy/you name it” it’s still one of my favourite songs in the moment.
